Caring for Your KOVA Atelier Piece

Full Grain Aniline Leather

Full grain aniline leather is leather in its most natural state. It is dyed through, with no pigment coating on the surface, so you see and feel the true grain of the hide. That openness is what makes it soft, warm and breathable. It also means the leather responds to its surroundings, and a little regular care keeps it beautiful for years.

A living material

Natural markings such as small scars, wrinkles, veins and variations in tone are part of every hide. They are signs of genuine full grain leather, not flaws. Over time, light, touch and use will deepen the color and soften the surface into a rich patina that is unique to your piece.

Everyday care

  • Dust once a week with a soft, dry, clean white cloth.
  • For seams and crevices, use a vacuum with a soft brush attachment on low suction.
  • Plump and rotate cushions regularly so they wear evenly.

Placement

  • Keep your piece out of direct sunlight and strong indirect light, which can fade and dry the leather.
  • Keep it at least 2 feet from radiators, fireplaces, heating vents and other heat sources.
  • A room between 60°F and 77°F with 40% to 60% humidity is ideal.

Spills and marks

  • Act quickly. Blot with a clean, dry, absorbent white cloth. Do not rub.
  • If needed, dampen a cloth lightly with distilled water and work gently from seam to seam across the whole panel, so it dries evenly.
  • Let the leather air dry. Never use a hair dryer or any other heat.
  • Many light marks and water spots soften and blend into the leather over time.
  • For oil, grease, ink or stubborn stains, contact us before trying to treat them yourself.

Conditioning and protection

  • Apply a cream made specifically for aniline leather 2 to 4 times a year, more often for pieces in heavy use or bright rooms.
  • Always test first on a hidden area.
  • Apply a small amount with a soft cloth in light circular motions, let it absorb, then buff gently.
  • Not sure which cream to use? Ask us before the first application.

What to avoid

  • Household cleaners, soaps, detergents and baby wipes
  • Bleach, ammonia, alcohol, acetone, window cleaners and solvents
  • Oils, silicone or wax polishes, and saddle soap
  • Spraying any product directly onto the leather
  • Sharp objects, pet claws, and newsprint or dyed fabrics that can transfer color
